Leipzig Restaurants and Leipzig Dining
(Leipzig, Saxony, Germany, DE)
Gingerbread is a famous local speciality of Saxony and amongst the best in the whole of Germany, being readily available at bakeries throughout Leipzig and known locally as 'lebkuchen'. Traditional hearty German fare is also worth looking out for at the many restaurants in Leipzig and ensures that you will never go hungry.
When dining out at restaurants in Leipzig, the drinks are often almost as important as the meal itself and both locals and visitors like to wash down their meal with either a stein of locally produced beer or a glass of German Riesling wine.
Leipzig Restaurants and Dining: What to Eat - Leipzig, Germany, DE
Leipzig has a good choice of local dishes for you to devour, ranging from pot-roasted beef and tasty sausages, to vegetable soups and grilled trout. A particularly favourite with those dining out is the Leipziger Allerlei, which is an attractive vegetarian dish made from carrots, green beans, asparagus, mushrooms and cauliflower, being available at many of the city's German restaurants. For typically touristy German fare, a plate of grilled bratwurst sausages, sauerkraut cabbage and mashed potato is hard to beat.
Leipzig Restaurants and Dining: Where to Eat - Leipzig, Germany, DE
Whilst restaurants can be found all around Leipzig, the two highest concentrations are located within both the city centre and the historic Old Town area. Particularly popular are the innumerable cafes and cheap eats around the Marktplatz (market place), and also those close to the nearby stretch of Petersstrasse and the interconnecting alleyways. During the summer months in particular, the dining scene around the Marktplatz explodes, with both restaurants and cafes moving their seating outside onto the flagstones.
Also worth noting, the region between the Bruhl areas and Leipzig's New Town Hall is home to a true plethora of dining and drinking spots, where live music often creates an alluring atmosphere. The Hauptbahnhof is also home to a number of eateries, both inside and nearby.
Particular dining hotspots within Leipzig include Barfussgässchen, Gottschedstrasse, Grosse Fleischergasse, Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse, Kleine Fleischergasse, Kolonnadenstrasse, Neumarkt, Nikolaikirchhof, Nikolaistrasse and Richard-Wagner-Strasse, where restaurants are in good supply.
